Free SSL certificates with Raidboxes

Everything you need to know about free SSL certificates for your Box.

Written by Kerstin Kegel

Raidboxes provides a free Let's Encrypt SSL certificate for your Box, allowing your website to be accessed securely over HTTPS.

This is available for both WordPress Single Sites and Multisites.

SSL requirements: Connect your domain to your Box

Before Raidboxes can provide an SSL certificate for your own domain, the domain must be correctly connected to your Box.

The steps depend on where your domain is managed:

If your domain is managed by an external provider, the required DNS records must point to Raidboxes.

Your domain must be correctly connected to your Box before an SSL certificate can be provided. If the connection isn't complete yet or recent DNS changes haven't taken effect, the SSL certificate cannot yet be issued for your domain.

What type of SSL certificate does Raidboxes use?

Raidboxes uses a Let's Encrypt DV (Domain Validation) certificate.

A DV certificate (Domain Validation) verifies that you control the domain before the certificate is issued. Once verified, the certificate secures the connection between your website and your visitors' browsers using HTTPS.

The Let's Encrypt certificate provided with your Box is included at no extra cost.

Is the SSL certificate renewed automatically?

✅ Yes. The SSL certificate provided by Raidboxes is renewed automatically, so you don't need to renew it yourself.

Your domain must remain correctly connected to your Box for automatic renewal to work.

Why should I use HTTPS?

HTTPS encrypts the data exchanged between your website and its visitors. This is particularly important when users submit information through your website, for example through forms or login pages.

HTTPS is also the standard for secure connections on the web and is expected by modern browsers.

SSL for your Box's temporary domain

Every Box comes with a temporary myrdbx.io domain, which you can use to access your website before connecting your own domain.

Raidboxes uses a shared SSL certificate for myrdbx.io domains, so your temporary domain is automatically available over HTTPS. There's no need to set up a separate SSL certificate for it.

Once you've correctly connected your own domain to your Box, an SSL certificate will also be provided for that domain.

Can I use my own SSL certificate?

Yes. If you'd prefer to use your own SSL certificate instead of the free Let's Encrypt certificate, you can upload it directly through your Raidboxes Dashboard.

You'll find this option under Box > Settings > Server > SSL.

Before you can upload and validate your own certificate, the relevant domain must already be correctly connected to your Box.

For step-by-step instructions, including the required certificate files and how to validate and manage your certificate, see: Custom SSL Certificate

Please note: Custom SSL certificates are not renewed automatically by Raidboxes. You'll need to renew and upload your certificate again before it expires. The free Let's Encrypt certificate, on the other hand, is renewed automatically.
