Upload your own SSL certificate

At Raidboxes, SSL is enabled by default for all Boxes. Your website is automatically protected with a free Let's Encrypt certificate. In some cases, however, you may want to use your own SSL certificate – such as an Extended Validation (EV) certificate or a wildcard certificate from another provider.

In this article, we will show you how to upload and manage your own SSL certificate.

When do you need your own SSL certificate?

For most websites, the free Let's Encrypt certificate is perfectly adequate. However, having your own certificate can be useful if you:

  • You need an EV certificate that displays the company name in the browser bar.

  • You want to use a wildcard certificate for multiple subdomains.

  • You must meet specific compliance requirements.

  • A certificate from a specific provider is required.

Requirements for your certificate

Before uploading your certificate, ensure that it meets the following requirements:

⚠️ Important: The private key must not be password-protected. If your key is encrypted, you must decrypt it first.

How to upload your own certificate

  1. Open your Raidboxes Dashboard and navigate to your Box.

  2. Click on Settings in the left-hand navigation bar.

  3. Select the menu item SSL under the "Server" section.

  4. In the upper section, you can see the SSL status with the active toggle and the currently installed certificate.

  5. Scroll to the section Upload new certificate

  6. Upload the required files:

    • Certificate: Your SSL certificate file

    • Private key: The corresponding private key

    • CA certificate: Your provider's intermediate or chain certificate

  7. Click on Validate certificate

ℹ️ The certificate is validated automatically. If all files are correct and match, your own certificate will be activated immediately.

Delete your own certificate

If you want to switch back to the free Let's Encrypt certificate:

  1. Navigate to Settings → SSL in your Box.

  2. In the "Current certificate" section, click on the Delete certificate button.

  3. Confirm the deletion in the dialogue Box with OK.

After deletion, a Let's Encrypt certificate will automatically be created and activated for your Box again.

Frequently asked questions

My certificate is not accepted – what can I do?

Check the following points:

  • Are all files in PEM format?

  • Is the private key not password protected?

  • Do the certificate and private key match? The key must belong exactly to this certificate.

  • Is the certificate issued for the correct domain?

  • Is the certificate still valid and has it not already expired?

ℹ️ Tip: If you are unsure whether your certificate and private key belong together, you can check this using an online tool such as SSL Checker.

Do I need to renew my certificate manually?

Yes, you must renew your own certificates yourself and re-upload them before they expire. However, we automatically renew the Let's Encrypt certificate – you don't have to worry about a thing.

Can I upload multiple certificates?

No, only one separate SSL certificate can be active per Box. When you upload a new certificate, it replaces the previous one.
