But at first it is necessary to declare which types of WordPress updates exists.
What types of updates are available?
The WordPress development team releases major and minor updates at regular intervals. The smaller updates are called minor updates and are mainly security and maintenance updates. That means that they fix critical bugs and security gaps. Minor Updates usually don't create any issues of compatibility. These updates always have three-digit version numbers, e.g. 5.8.1.
Major updates have two-digit version numbers (e.g. 5.8) and introduce bigger changes to the WordPress core software – e.g. new features. This is why major updates could lead to conflicts between plugins, themes and certain functions of your site. For this reason we always proceed with the updates as follows:
Minor Updates: These updates will be installed on all Boxes as soon as possible after the release. This process usually takes no longer than 48 hours. As a Raidboxes customer you will be directly informed by email after the update.
Major Updates: These updates will only be rolled out on all Boxes after a waiting period of 14 days. Furthermore, we will always inform you one or two weeks before a major update in case you would like to prevent your Box from updating.
How can I prevent my Box from being upgraded?
Minor updates cannot be skipped. To prevent a major update by freezing your WordPress version, navigate to the settings of your Box and select WP version in the submenu WordPress.
Now click Off in the WP Version next to Freeze Version so that the button becomes green.
If you freeze the WP-Version of your Box, it will not be updated with the next major update.
(You will find a step-by-step guide for fixing the WP version in this article.)
Please note: Your Box can only skip a maximum of two major versions. This means that all Boxes that run for example under WP 5.6 will be automatically upgraded to WP 5.7 during the upgrade of WordPress 5.9. This is the only way we can provide Boxes with the necessary security updates.
