Migrating your website manually is optional and can be started at any time. The migration waves managed by Raidboxes will, however, start according to a fixed schedule.

The process in brief

If you want to migrate a website yourself, a copy of your existing Box will be created on the new infrastructure. Once this is done, you can switch your contract to the new Box and connect the domain.

💡Because the new Box uses different IP addresses, it is necessary to reconnect the domain using an A and AAAA record.

Guide to manual server migration

💡 Tip: If you want to migrate a dynamic website (e.g. a shop), we recommend putting your website into maintenance mode for the duration of the process.

(1) Create a new backup

Use the backup from last night if you have not yet worked on your website or create a manual backup.

(2) Clone a new Box from the backup

In the backup management area, click on Clone Box from backup and select the desired Box size (Mini to Pro).

(3) Remove domain from your old Box

Navigate to the Box overview and remove the domains from your old Box.

(4) Connect your existing contract to the new Box

Remove the contract for the old Box and assign the cloned Box to this contract.

To do this, go to contract management and click on Details. There you’ll find the option to remove the Box from the contract.

Once the contract has been removed, click on the newly created Box. At the top you’ll find the orange banner, which you can use to activate the Box. Choose the option to assign the Box to the existing contract.

(5) Connect your domain to the new Box

Enter the domain in the cloned Box and adjust the DNS management. Remember that Boxes on the new infrastructure have an IPv6 address in addition to the IPv4 address. IPv6 addresses must be connected via an AAAA entry.

If your domain is hosted at Raidboxes, all necessary entries will be set automatically as soon as you enter the domain for the Box.

If your domain is hosted with another provider, log into your account and change the DNS entries via the administration panel of your domain provider. In case you need help connecting an external domain, please contact our support team.

💡 Tip: You can use tools such as the DNS Checker to check whether the new domain entries are already being propagated globally.

FAQ

Can I also migrate High Traffic Boxes (Pro XL and above) to the new infrastructure?

Yes, any website can be migrated. However, only Boxes in the size of Mini, Starter, Fully Managed and Pro are currently available. Therefore, the highest possible performance level created from the backup of a Business Box is a Pro Box.

I would like to migrate a Demo Box to the new infrastructure. How do I proceed?

If your Box is not connected to a domain or a contract, only steps 1 & 2 from the guide are relevant for you. If you get stuck with one of these actions due to missing authorisations, we’re happy to help you out in live chat.
