Why can't I connect via FTP?

Follow these steps if your FTP client cannot establish a connection to your box.

Connection problems between an FTP client and a box can happen for a number of different reasons. Typical error sources include:

  • Entering wrong credentials

  • Problems with the internet connection

  • Issues with the FTP client itself.

The wording of the displayed error messages gives a good indication as to why the connection between the FTP client and your box has failed.

The cause of the error message in the screenshot below, for example, is wrong credentials being entered.

FTP Client Error

The access data for the SFTP server can be found in the respective box overview and the password is your Raidboxes account password. Our article FTP Credentials explains exactly where to find your access data.

If you receive the message that authentication has failed, first check whether you've entered the correct credentials. If this is the case, change the Raidboxes password in the profile of your Raidboxes Dashboard, wait a moment and try again.

If you still can't establish a connection, please try the following steps that are also useful for other FTP client error message too:

  • Is there an update for the FTP client?
    Check whether your FTP client is up to date. Run any available updates.

  • Try another FTP client
    Certain FTP clients, e.g. Cyberduck and ForkLift, can cause issues. Consider switching to FileZilla instead.

  • Change your device
    Try to connect to your box via FTP from another device.

  • Switch your internet connection
    In addition to trying a different device, using a different internet connection can also help. Switching to a mobile data connection (i.e. via a hotspot) makes the most sense as firewalls in the local network can sometimes block access.

  • Reboot your device

    A device reboot is usually required after updating or reinstalling an FTP client).
